DIVERSIDAD GENÉTICA Y MEJORAMIENTO DE PLANTAS MEDICINALES= Medicinal plants and improvement of medicinal herbs:

The cyanobacteria belonging to the genus Nostoc fix atm. nitrogen, both as free-living organisms and in symbiotic assocns. with a wide range of hosts, including bryophytes, gymnosperms (cycads), the small water fern Azolla (Pteridophyte), the angiosperm genus Gunnera, and fungi (lichens).  The Gunnera-Nostoc symbiosis is the only one that involves a flowering plant.  In Chile, 12 species of Gunnera have been described with a broad distribution in the temperate region.  The authors examd. the genetic diversity of Nostoc symbionts from three populations of Gunnera tinctoria from Abtao, Chiloe Island, southern Chile, and microsymbionts from other two species of Gunnera from southern Chile, using PCR amplification of STRR (short tandemly repeated repetitive) sequences of the Nostoc infected tissue.  This is the first report of PCR fingerprinting obtained directly from symbiotic tissue of Gunnera.  Genetic analyses revealed that Nostoc symbionts exhibit important genetic diversity among host plants, both within and between Gunnera populations.  It was also found that only one Nostoc strain, or closely related strains, established symbiosis with an individual plant host.

Distribución: Regiones Coquimbo, Valparaiso, O’Higgins, Maule, Nuble, Biobio, Araucania, Los Lagos, Aysen, Magallanes. Archipielago Juan Fernandez.

Usos medicinales: Sus hojas cocidas alivian la fiebre si se colocan en la espalda o en los rinones. La decoccion de tallos y raices se usa par combatir la diarrea y hemorragias. Las flores se usan para lavados vaginales. Los rizomas y la base del tallo preparados con vino tinto y azucar, se usan para mitigar ulceras. Los exudados de la base de los tallos y los rizomas se usan para curar quemaduras.

Usos tradicionales
a) uso y dolorosas; diarreas, afecciones estomacales y del hígado; fiebre.interno: hemorragias; reglas abundantes
La infusión se prepara con 1 cucharada de hojas para 1 litro de agua recién hervida: beber 1 taza 3 veces en el día.
La decocción (cocimiento) de las hojas sirve para disminuir la fiebre. Se prepara con 1 cucharada para 1 litro de agua hirviendo por 10 minutos: beber 1 taza 3 veces en el día.
b) uso externo: heridas, irritación vaginal y de encías; dolor de garganta.
La infusión sirve para lavar heridas.
La decocción (cocimiento) de raíz y/o tallo triturado se prepara con 1 cucharada del material para 1 litro de agua; hervir por 10 minutos. Usar para lavados o hacer gárgaras.

Efectos: astringente, hemostático, febrifugo.
